Message from the President, VSI

Dear friends,

Healthy blood vessels are essential for the maintenance of quality of life as the age advances. The vascular problems such as stenosis, aneurysms, arteriovenous communications involving the arteries and veins in the extremities or abdomen can seriously threaten the limb or life of people. There are very few hospitals in our country which can provide vascular surgical services to meet the needs of a billion people. There is increasing need for vascular surgical treatments in our society. Yet, there are very few vascular surgery teaching centres with facilities and teachers for this speciality only in few cities. During the past few years “Vascular Society of India” has been in the forefront of spreading the awareness of the peripheral vascular disease (Buerger’s disease, atherosclerosis, aneurysms, thrombosis, varicose veins, non healing ulcers, vascular trauma) in India among the medical fraternity and society. Limb salvage and improvement of the quality of life are the primary concerns of a vascular surgeon. It is now well recognized that a team work helps us in the management of our patients with risk factors such as smoking, hypertension, diabetes, autoimmune disorders as they develop the coronary, cerebrovascular, renovascular and peripheral vascular diseases. Interdisciplinary coordination and cooperation has been shown to be the need of the hour to deliver better services to our patients. Vascular society of India is looking forward for the development of better training facilities for vascular surgeons in India and upgrading the knowledge of the practising vascular surgeons through different educational programs, workshops and publications. In the coming years we also would like to closely associate ourselves with the other specialist associations to understand the vascular disease, prognosis and provide better services with a competitive spirit.
